Our Story
In 2009, Doug Bauer, Tom Mitchell and Mike Grubbs shared a vision and concept for a new kind of homebuilding company-one driven by home design that provides homebuyers and their families with a lifetime of experiences.
That year, the economic downturn crippled many industries. However, they recognized this time as an opportunity to bring their vision to life. They drew upon their 25+ years of homebuilding know-how to create TRI Pointe Homes®.
TRI Pointe Homes quickly became a publicly held company, trading under “TPH” on the NYSE. It was the first IPO in homebuilding to emerge after the downturn. Within 5 years, the company merged with Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company (WRECO), which operated five distinct homebuilding companies in seven states, and became TRI Pointe Group®. This merger created one of the top 10 largest public homebuilding companies in the United States based on revenue. Just six years later, TRI Pointe Group and its six regional homebuilding brands, composed of TRI Pointe Homes in California, Colorado and the Carolinas; Maracay® in Arizona; Pardee Homes® in California and Nevada; Quadrant Homes® in Washington; Trendmaker® Homes in Texas; and Winchester® Homes1 in Maryland and Northern Virginia had delighted more than 28,000 homeowners, establishing 330 beautiful neighborhoods and 15 incredible masterplan communities, and winning over 270 separate awards, while supporting more than 150 community causes.
In 2021, this innovative, design-forward company became Tri Pointe Homes, a unified brand that brings the best of big and small to all its homebuyers, with operations in 12 states and the District of Columbia. As Tri Pointe Homes, the company continues to support and celebrate the longevity of team members and their local-market expertise and relationships, while leading the industry with company-wide programs such as LivingSmart®, a commitment to healthy and environmentally responsible business practices and Tri Pointe Solutions®, a suite of services that streamline the buying process, start to finish.
Marking an exciting new chapter in its evolution, Tri Pointe Homes joined the Sumitomo Forestry Group in 2026, joining a globally recognized leader in sustainable housing and wood-based building solutions. The partnership strengthens Tri Pointe Homes’ platform by combining its premium brand and local operating expertise with Sumitomo Forestry’s global resources, supporting expanded scale, efficiency, and long-term growth in the U.S. housing market.
Open-minded with a progressive spirit, Tri Pointe Homes is committed to the leading-edge design, sustainable building practices and personalization that, together, make a premium lifestyle possible for homebuyers, whatever their price point or life stage.
